With the most dramatic views of the world, Rongbuk Monastery is a Tibetan Buddhist Monastery in Tibet Autonomous Region of China.

Known as the Sacred Threshold of Everest, Rongbuk Monastery acts as an important pilgrimage site for Sherpas living in the slopes of Everest in the Khumbu Region of Nepal and people of Magnolias. Situated 4,980 metres (16,340 ft) near the base of North side of Everest, this monastery clams to be the highest (above sea level) Monastery of the world.

The monastery was founded by a  Nyingmapa Lama in 1902. The monastery was build in an area where communities of nuns and monks used to meditation since 18th century. Hermitage meditation caves dotting the cliff walls all of the monastery complex clearly shows that the area had meditation huts and caves used by the nuns some around 400 years ago.

Rongbuk Monastery was completed destroyed  by the excesses of China’s Cultural Revolution by 1974, and was left in ruins for several years. Renovation work has been carried out since 1983 with some of excellent new murals.


In the past Rongbuk Monastery acted and served as an active place of Buddhist teaching. Even today it is a special Buddhist pilgrimage site where devotees far from Nepal and Mongolia come to be a part of annual ceremonies.

Situated near the tongue of the Rongbuk Glacier on the north side of Mount Everest, this monastery is frequently visited by mountain climbers heading toward the everest summit from the Northern side.

Placed in a unique location, Rongbuk monastery has a dramatic views of the north face of Mount Everest and its surrounding mountains. (shishapangma, Cho Oyu, and Gyachung Kang)

The view is particularly glorious at sunrise and sunset.

It took weeks  to reach the monastery, however getting to Rongbuk Monastery has become much more easier today.The monastery is accessible by road after a two- to three-hour drive from the Friendship Highway. The major highlight of the monastery is the Mount Everest Observation and Tibetan Festival Performance.

The best season to go is the periods between April and May, along with early September and late October. Near to the monastery there is a basic guesthouse and small but cosy restaurant to stay overnight.
